Yes — you can dedicate a contribution “in honor” or “in memory” of someone… BUT
The donation must still be made in your own name (or the legal contributor’s name).
Campaigns are not allowed to accept contributions made on behalf of another person or list someone else as the donor. That means:
✅ You can make a donation and add a note saying it is in honor or memory of someone
✅ The campaign may acknowledge the dedication in its materials if appropriate
⚠️ The contribution must be reported under the actual donor’s name, not the honoree
❌ You cannot make a donation using another person’s money or identity
❌ You cannot donate in someone else’s name to “credit” them as the donor
This is required under federal and most state campaign-finance laws to prevent straw donations and ensure transparency in reporting.
Bottom line
A tribute dedication is fine —
the sentiment belongs to the honoree, but the contribution belongs to the donor.
